I have been playing, performing, and teaching guitar and 5-string banjo for more than 30 years. I graduated from the Musician’s Institute in Los Angles in the early 1980s, where I was privileged to study with many guitar greats including Howard Roberts, Robben Ford, Joe Pass and Frank Gambale. Although I am no longer a full-time musician — I’m now a licensed psychologist specializing in neuropsychology — I am still enamored with music. My musical interests are broad and I have played and taught many styles including jazz, blues, bluegrass, country, folk, Celtic, Klezmer and other types of ‘ethnic’ music. On guitar, I teach both ‘flatpicking’ and fingerpicking styles. For banjo, I teach both 3-finger picking (‘Scruggs style’, melodic style, and ‘single-string’ style) as well as the clawhammer / frailing approach.
I offer state-of-the-art instruction that features:
Learning to play an instrument takes a desire to learn, consistency, practice and patience. And having fun is an essential element — if you’re not smiling a lot, something is missing! I offer weekly one-on-one full-hour lessons in a comfortable instruction studio in Ashland, and I provide customized learning plans based on your individual musical interest, abilities, and goals. I can help you create a learning program that will work for you.
