The 16-piece big band SOUTHERN OREGON JAZZ ORCHESTRA has in its repertoire a mix of highly danceable swing, Latin and classic big band arrangements. Formed by trumpeter Corren Hileman in the Spring of 2008, the band has played in a variety of venues such as the Bear Creek Summer concert series in Medford, the Grants Pass Outdoor concert series, the Rogue Valley Manor and the Evergreen Ballroom in Central Point. Currently the band is playing music for dancing, monthly at the Eagles Aerie in Medford and twice a month at Howiees in Medford. Most prominently SOJO has played at the Medford Jazz Festival for the last four years. In January of 2012, the band played a two-week engagement at the Camelot Theater, Spotlight on the USO. SOJO is available privately to play for a wide range of functions.
Alan Berman is the featured male vocalist who also plays piano. Also featured is Dianne Strong, female vocalist. Instrumental soloists include Frank Kenney on tenor saxophone, Daniel Chavez and Jeremy Durst on alto saxophone, Steve Horton on trombone and Pat DeBellis on trumpet. The band is an exciting mix of local musicians, musicians from the Rogue Valley Symphony and former members of the Jefferson State Jazz Orchestra.
