Bellwood Violin Shop in Ashland, Oregon has been owned and operated by Stephen Bacon for thirty years. Here he does repairs and restoration of string instruments and historic musical instruments of all kinds. In addition, he does appraisals, rentals and sales. He is joined by Alex Buktenica, Brad Holst, Laurel Bloombaum and Karissa Amadeus.
Stephen’s great-grandfather owned the violin shop of John Hornsteiner in Chicago during the early 1900’s. Stephen began making and repairing musical instruments at age seventeen in his grandfather’s shop. Stephen’s formal education includes a music degree from El Camino College in Southern California and independent studies in the theory and construction of historic instruments from Cal State Dominguez Hills. In addition, he has done extended studies with U.S.C. Isomata, U.C. Riverside, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Ali Akbar School of Music in San Rafael, California and S.O.U.
Stephen came to Ashland, Oregon in 1979 to play with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Green Show Musicians. He worked in town as a recorder maker for a number of years before opening his violin shop. Stephen has served on the board of the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon, is a board member and performer with the Jefferson Baroque Orchestra and Musica Matrix, and has served as adjunct faculty at Southern Oregon University where he is the conservator for the Schuman Instrument Collection.
Bellwood Violin Shop is open Monday — Friday, noon to 5:00 p.m. or by appointment. Next door to the Bellwood Violin Shop, Stephen also runs The Instrument Workshop, an international harpsichord accessories supply company.
